ABDOMINOPLASTY / TUMMY TUCK

Many surveys over the years reveal that flat, toned abs are the sexiest part of the human body. Thousands of people spend countless hours trying to flatten their stomach, but to no avail. Many people over the course of life develop a protruding abdomen made up of loose, sagging skin and fatty tissue. The usual causes of a protruding abdomen are:

• Heredity

• Pregnancy

• Aging

• Significant fluctuations in weight

• Prior surgery

Commonly known as a tummy tuck, an Abdominoplasty removes excess fat and skin in the abdominal area, and often mends weakened and separated muscles that will then fashion a firm, sexy waistline.

An abdominoplasty will not replace the benefits of an effective diet and exercise program.

The benefits of an abdominoplasty can remain permanent, but this is dependant on the patients’ lifestyle, the possibility of future pregnancies, or the possibility of significant weight loss. If pregnancy or significant weight loss is planned, it would be wise to postpone having an abdominoplasty.

To determine if an abdominoplasty is an option for you, answer these questions honestly:

• Heredity

• Pregnancy

• Aging

• Significant fluctuations in weight

• Prior surgery

PREOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS USUALLY INCLUDE:

Taking certain kinds of vitamins

• Eliminating certain drugs (like birth control pills, aspirin, other anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain herbal supplements) to minimize excess bleeding

• Stop smoking long before the surgery.

DURING THE SURGERY:

The surgery is performed under IV sedation and local anesthetia, depending on the extent of the correction. Surgeons begin a full abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) by making a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen just above the pubic area. Then a second incision is made around the belly button so the skin in the area can be loosened for adjustment. The patient’s skin is then separated from the abdominal wall. The surgeon then pulls the loose abdominal muscles together by suturing the right side and the left side together. This is how the abdominal muscles are tightened creating a stronger, firmer core, and a narrower waist. At this point, the excess belly skin is removed and a new hole is cut for the belly button. After this is done, the incisions are closed using sutures (stitches) and/or staples.

There is another option that is less extensive called a mini, or a partial, tummy tuck that is designed to treat abdominal problems below the belly button. This is a much less invasive procedure and is usually done on an outpatient basis and requires a local form of anesthetic. It is not uncommon for surgeons to recommend adding a certain degree of liposuction to their procedure. Liposuction is used to remove fatty deposits from the hips to create a more dramatic body contouring result. Occasionally, liposuction alone may provide the level of results some patients are looking for.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE IS COMPLETE:

As always, it is very important to follow your surgeon’s instructions when recovering from your surgery. In order to promote proper healing, the bandages used will be firm, elastic bands. The doctor will show you how to sit and lay down in ways that will help ease pain and discomfort. Physically active persons beware: you will have to severely limit your normal routine for up to six weeks. Your doctor will advise you according to your specific situation. You may be required to take up to one month of work to allow for enough recovery time before re-entering normal life. Even though you will be very pleased with your new look, it may take some time for you to feel completely back to normal. This is okay, considering the amount of physical and emotional preparation you had to undergo to get to the point of working back into a normal routine. Don’t push yourself, and follow the diet and exercise routine your doctor will outline for you to maintain your new body.
