Preparing for cosmetic surgery involves more than just scheduling your pre-op appointments and arranging time off work. One of the most critical steps you can take to ensure a smooth, safe, and comfortable healing process happens right in your own home.

When you return from the operating room, your body will need significant rest, and your mobility will be temporarily limited. If your living space is cluttered, or if essential items are stored out of easy reach, you risk straining your incisions, increasing your pain, or even suffering a fall.

Setting up a dedicated recovery environment before you leave for surgery reduces stress for both you and your caregiver, allowing you to focus entirely on healing.

Create a Ground-Floor Recovery Station

After surgery, navigating stairs is often difficult, unsafe, or strictly prohibited. If your bedroom is on the second floor, you should temporarily relocate your recovery space to the ground floor. A comfortable recliner or a couch is often ideal, as it allows you to rest with your head and chest slightly elevated, which helps minimize postoperative swelling.

Build your “recovery station” within arm’s reach. Stock a side table with everything you will need for the first 48 to 72 hours so you do not have to get up frequently.

Your station should include:

  • Your prescribed medications, pain relievers, and a pill organizer.
  • A large, refillable water bottle to keep you hydrated.
  • Easy-to-eat, nutrient-dense snacks.
  • Your phone, a long charging cord, and the TV remote.
  • A notebook and pen to track your medication schedule.
  • Extra pillows and a lightweight blanket.

Prepare Your Sleeping Arrangements

Sleep is when your body does the heavy lifting of cellular repair and wound healing. However, finding a comfortable sleeping position after surgery can be challenging, particularly after body contouring or facial procedures.

If you had abdominal surgery like a tummy tuck, you will not be able to lie flat on your back. You will need to sleep in a slightly bent, reclined position to prevent tension on your tightened abdominal muscles and incisions. If you had facial surgery, keeping your head elevated above your heart is vital to minimize swelling and bruising. Reviewing the best sleeping positions after cosmetic surgery beforehand will help you gather the right wedge pillows or arrange a recliner so you are not struggling to get comfortable on the night of your procedure.

Stock Up on Comfortable Clothing

You will not want to wear tight, restrictive clothing that has to be pulled over your head or wiggled up over your hips during the days following surgery.

Prepare your wardrobe by washing and setting aside loose, dark-colored clothing. Button-up shirts or zip-up hoodies are highly recommended, as you can easily slip them on and off without raising your arms or stretching your incisions. Soft, elastic-waistband pants or loose shorts are ideal for lower body procedures. Additionally, purchase slip-on shoes or slides, as you will not be able to safely bend over to tie shoelaces.

If your surgeon requires you to wear a postoperative compression garment, make sure you understand how to put it on and take it off before the day of your surgery.

Plan Meals and Hydration in Advance

Proper nutrition and hydration are foundational to the wound healing process. General anesthesia and postoperative pain medications can cause nausea and constipation, making heavy, greasy meals difficult to digest.

Before your surgery date, prepare and freeze nutrient-dense, easy-to-digest meals. Focus on foods rich in protein to support tissue repair, and complex carbohydrates to maintain your energy. Stock up on high-fiber foods, fresh fruits, and vegetables to help combat medication-induced constipation.

Hydration is equally critical. Dehydration can exacerbate fatigue, dizziness, and swelling. Keep a large water bottle at your recovery station and aim to sip water continuously throughout the day. To understand exactly how your diet impacts your healing timeline, reviewing guidelines on what to eat before and after plastic surgery can help you optimize your meal prep.

Fall-Proof Your Home and Manage Pets

Postoperative dizziness, muscle relaxants, and restricted mobility significantly increase your risk of tripping or falling. A fall during recovery can tear incisions, cause bleeding, or damage newly placed implants.

Walk through your home and remove any tripping hazards. Secure loose area rugs, tuck away electrical cords, and ensure walkways are completely clear. If you have pets, especially small dogs or cats that tend to weave between your feet, arrange for someone to help manage them. You will not be able to bend down to pick up heavy bags of pet food, and a sudden jump from an excited pet could strike a sensitive surgical site.

Additionally, make your bathroom safe. Consider installing temporary grab bars in the shower, placing a non-slip mat on the floor, and keeping a sturdy step-stool available if you need to elevate your legs.

When to Speak With Your Surgical Team

Preparing your home is an essential part of your surgical journey, but it works in tandem with the medical guidance provided by your surgical team. BGMG Cosmetics follows rigorous safety standards to ensure your physical environment supports a complication-free recovery.

If you are unsure about specific postoperative restrictions, such as how much weight you can lift or when it is safe to shower, ask your surgeon during your pre-op appointment. If you are ready to begin planning your surgical journey, you can book a consultation with BGMG Cosmetics to discuss your aesthetic goals, review safety protocols, and receive personalized advice on how to prepare your home and body for a successful recovery.
