The Procedure:
Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is designed to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a smaller, more proportionate breast size. The procedure generally includes the following steps:
- Consultation & Pre-Surgical Planning: The surgeon evaluates the patient’s medical history, breast size, and goals to determine the best surgical approach.
- Anesthesia: The patient is placed under general anesthesia for comfort during the procedure.
- Incision Placement: The surgeon makes incisions based on the chosen technique:
- Anchor (Inverted-T) Incision – Best for large reductions, offering maximum reshaping.
- Vertical (Lollipop) Incision – Suitable for moderate reductions with minimal scarring.
- Liposuction-Only Reduction – Used when fat removal is the primary goal.
- Tissue Removal & Reshaping: Excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin are removed, and the remaining tissue is reshaped and lifted for a youthful appearance.
- Nipple Repositioning: If necessary, the nipple and areola are moved to a more natural position while maintaining blood supply.
- Closing the Incisions & Recovery: The incisions are closed with sutures, and post-surgical bandages or a compression bra are applied to aid healing.
Recovery:
Breast reduction recovery is gradual but highly rewarding, with most patients experiencing:
- Initial swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort that subsides within a few weeks
- Limited physical activity for the first two weeks to allow proper healing
- Wearing a supportive surgical bra to minimize swelling and provide comfort
- Final results becoming more visible within three to six months as swelling fully resolves
Post-Op Care & Precautions:
To ensure a smooth recovery and the best long-term results, patients should:
✔️ Follow all post-op instructions from their surgeon, including medication guidelines
✔️ Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for at least 4-6 weeks
✔️ Keep the incision sites clean and dry to prevent infection
✔️ Sleep on your back to reduce pressure on the breasts
✔️ Maintain a healthy lifestyle to preserve the long-term benefits of the procedure
